When specialist school status is
awarded to an institution, it comes with a lump sum of money
which has to be invested in a capital build project. The
Castle School, as part of the bid decided to build an
additional art studio which incorporated a gallery
space. The space available for the build was rather
limited (it was previously occupied by the schools central
heating oil tanks). In order to make best use of the
space an octagonal building was designed and is currently
under construction. It is due for completion in April
and an inaugural exhibition of the work of the British based
printmaker Trevor Haddrell is due to take place in June.
Details of that and all forthcoming exhibitions (watch out for
David Hockney and Peter Blake) will be sent out to schools and
other interested parties.
We see the addition as something which will not only raise the
profile of the visual arts in the school but which will be a
welcome addition to the facilities currently available to the
wider community of Thornbury and the surrounding area of South
Gloucestershire.
