Extended Schools

"An Extended School is a school that recognises that it cannot work alone in helping children and young people to achieve their potential, and therefore decides to work in partnership with other agencies that have an interest in outcomes for children and young people, and with the local community. In doing so, it aims to help meet the wider needs of children, young people, families and their community". Department of Education and Skills 2004.
South Gloucestershire Council is committed to supporting school clusters in the development of extended activities and services that enhance the learning opportunities of children and young people.  We are encouraging schools to work in partnership with families, local communities and other Local Authority services to develop both new and existing projects.  The South Gloucestershire Strategy places school clusters at the heart of the  decision making process.

The Extended Schools Strategy Manager will act as a focal point for the Extended Schools agenda.  The Strategy Manager will work closely with, and support, the school clusters as they develop Extended Schools activities and services, and the co-ordination of various Local Authority services and external providers working in partnership with a school or cluster.

A new team of Play Rangers started work in the South Gloucestershire on the 9th October 2006.

The Play Rangers will inspire children ages 5 – 15 to go out to their local parks and play by creating secure environments for them to access. Though consultation they aim to support the children to improve play opportunities in their areas including fixed equipment in parks and facilities for young people making the areas more child/young person centred.
