COURSES FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS

"Somerset County Council's Education Department has had a long established commitment to promote courses for exceptionally able students of 9 - 16 years. Kilve Court has been the focus for this provision for Gifted and Talented children (formerly Exceptionally Able Children) for many years and is the leading organisation and venue with responsibility for work in this field in the Somerset LEA.

The programme is open to students from any LEA or school and the presence of students from a wide range of schools, backgrounds and areas has further enhanced the quality of the courses.

The Centre organises these courses in a range of subjects and varying lengths, from 1 to 5 days. They are advertised to all schools and colleges in Somerset and many in surrounding counties who have expressed an interest and have sent students in the past. The children are recommended by the Headteacher and other appropriate members of staff. Parents are asked if they wish to have their children nominated and, for those who agree, the school makes an application to Kilve Court. In a typical academic year approximately 1400 children attend Kilve Court's Gifted and Talented Children's courses.

Bursaries are available from a number of sources to help meet part of the cost of a course at Kilve Court when parents are unable to afford the full fee.

If you are interested in finding out more about these courses please approach the Headteacher or the Able Children's Co-ordinator at your child's school."

ENRICHMENT COURSES

"Enrichment courses for More Able children create the opportunity for parents to enrol children for these special courses. The programme provides an extensive range of topics over a year for students of 5 - 18 years. The Enrichment scheme offers weekend length courses, thereby enabling children to attend without losing school time and creating the maximum availability of key staff, all of whom are experienced teachers of able children and leading practitioners in their fields. Most courses run from 5.30pm on Friday to mid-afternoon on Sunday and these cost £94, but there are a few which are slightly longer and which are, therefore, slightly more expensive. The price includes accommodation, meals, tuition, materials and equipment. The courses are structured to give a demanding and intensive period of study and are designed for those children who have an enquiring mind, thrive on learning, enjoy creativity, welcome academic challenge and wish to widen their horizons beyond that of the National Curriculum. The courses are stimulating, thought-provoking and designed to assist in problem solving, extending knowledge and increasing confidence."
