Ideas for using Visualisers
|
A visualiser or document camera can be thought of as a more
sophisticated overhead projector. It is a special video camera
mounted on a stand. When connected to an LCD projector, the
teacher can place a sheet of paper (blank, or with text, graphs
or images on it) under the camera's lens and use a pencil or pen
to write on the paper while pupils watch what is happening on a
large screen.
Alternatively, the teacher can place an object, such as a
calculator, under the lens and demonstrate how to use it to
solve a problem. The teacher can display a ruler and magnify it
so that pupils can see details such as millimeters easily.
The system can also connect to a computer and project graphs,
text, photos, or anything that's displayed on the computer
screen.
The document camera can also take and save pictures of what's
being displayed, so while demonstrating how to solve a
mathematics problem, for instance, the teacher can snap a
picture of each step in the process. Pupils can later review the
steps on the document camera or a computer.
The image is typically displayed through an LCD projector onto a
screen. Although visualisers can be used independently they also
link in very well with Interactive Whiteboards enhancing and
developing the ways in which they can be used: the interactivity
of the board is enhanced and PowerPoint is possibly used less
often!

Some ideas for the use of visualisers are: |
Display text/images on a large screen:
|
- Share text with the whole class such as a reading book
or particular article
- Share children's work during a lesson for feedback.
- Use in Geography to share detailed maps.
- Share pictures/certificates/medals in assembly.
- Use to share words/music to a song.
- Use in plenary sessions to demonstrate quality work that
pupils have done and explore exactly what it is that makes
that piece of work excellent (raises pupil expectations of
what they can achieve).

Use zoom function to enable small objects to become viewable
by a large group:
|
- E.g. making mini-beasts visible beyond the naked eye,
Children's art work being displayed full screen
Focus in on tiny components, pollen grains, fabric,
textures, text.
Use in Chemistry to view and explain cell structure models
or look at crystals.
Environmental Science, looking at natural objects, pond
creatures, flowers
Use in history to explore artifacts in great detail.

Live demonstrations of practical subjects:

- Soldering in DT
- Condensation in science
- Paint mixing in Art.
- Use as a web cam in assembly to enable drama to be
visible by all or to capture on video.

Digital capture of still images:
|
- Recording annotations, keeping for student e-portfolio.
- To capture text for use in literacy – quicker and easier
than scanning or photocopying,
- Capture children's work for assessment purposes
- Take time delayed photographs such as the decomposition
of a flower.

Digital capture of video - recording processes:
|
- Capture a demonstration of a process in science for
repeating or using as part of a plenary,
- Capture a technical procedure being demonstrated in
technology - Video can be saved to PC or network for use in
future lessons.

Changing the image:
|
- The positive/negative feature could be used to turn
photo negatives into positive images or view positive images
or 3d objects as negatives.
- To turn a text from black on white to white on black
making it easier to read by some children.
- Use in design to look at complementary colors.

Use the freeze option:
|
- To Play Kim's game by removing an object for
observational skills.
- Put key words under and remove one. What's missing?
- Put a series of numbers under then remove 1 i.e. Prime
numbers, odd numbers.
- Put a piece of text under then cover up key words.
What's the missing word?
(You can keep image on screen while you prepare the next
object for viewing.)
