Opening Keynote
|
The opening keynote was provided by Jim Knight, Minister for
Schools. Some of the headlines were:
- One in 5 schools and colleges have already integrated
ICT fully into all aspects or school life
- The most effective schools provide clear evidence that
technology is helping to improve achievement and open up
choice through innovation
- The KS3 online test will not be made statutory but
should be used to support pupil assessment when required
- Reducing the digital divide by giving access to
disadvantaged pupils at home is a key aim. This will be
through extending the Computers for Pupils pilot and
building on the 20% of secondary schools who operate home
loan schemes.
- After school access should be opened up to pupils and
their parents through extended schools

Ofsted Update
|
Cathy Morgan, HMI provided a report for Ofsted based on the
findings from the 2005/6 inspection of primary, secondary
and post-16 ICT. Key elements from the report are that there
will be changes to the SEF requiring schools to report on:
- pupil adoption of safe practices in ICT,
- The extent to which ICT capability enables learners to
improve the quality of their work and make progress and the
- contribution of ICT to pupils’ economic well-being
|
Cathy Morgan, HMI, made clear that Ofsted now use similar
gradings to those being used in the self-review framework
and highlighted that good schools are using evidence from
the self-review framework to feed in to the SEF. It was also
made clear that Ofsted will be looking for greater use of
the self-review framework next year.
A summary of the speech can be accessed below. It is
reported under the headings of Every Child Matters and gives
a summary of strengths and areas for development in schools.
It also gives examples of effective practice and shows
extracts from Ofsted reports.
|
On the back of this speech all South Gloucestershire schools
have been sent materials to support their use of the
self-review framework. These materials include a DVD on
‘Finding Your Way with the Self-review Framework’ which
includes a video introduction and video case studies on how
six schools have used the framework.
Other leaflets sent to relevant schools were
- The Self-review Framework – Eight Elements
- Ways to Use the Self-review Framework
- The Self-review Framework Supporting the Primary
National Strategy
