| Foxes Wood
'Bump!' Jo fell out of bed sleepily. She immediately
listened for any more movement in the house and when there
wasn't any, she peered around at the time. it was 1.30
am. She scrambled up, found her torch in amongst all her
clothes that she had left in a heap the evening she went to
bed; she got dressed and headed for the door. Nervously,
Jo crept down the stairs, dodging the creaky fourth but
instead of going straight to Simon's, she went to the cupboard
under the stairs and grabbed her bag. She didn't realise
it had a tiny hole in it! She started to shove a huge
bar of chocolate into her bag and then went to a drawere to
get some batteries. She put them in. Suddenly, she
heard a loud noise. "What could that be?"
muttered Jo to herself quietly. It was the clatter of
plates but Jo didn't bother to pick any of them up. She
quickly brushed her hair (because she wanted to look good) and
tiptoed out the back door. Walking, walking, faster,
faster then running, Jo headed for the bumpy old road near her
house. The batteries were being thrown around in her bag
when suddenly, they bounced, hit the side of the bag and fell
out of the tiny hold. Jo didn't stop running until she
got to Simon's house.
It was quite obvious, when she got there, that Simon was
fast asleep. "Lazy so and so," Jo
muttered. She climbed up a tree (that was really quite
high), threw a little stone at the window and whispered quite
loudly, "Simon, Simon, come on, wake up!" All of a
sudden Jo sensed a presence near her. 'Is someone
following me?" she whispered to herself, but when she
swivelled around there was only a black cat, watching her on
the wall with beady green eyes. Jo shuddered, however
she carried on. Nothing moved, but a couple of seconds
later Simon's window opened.
"I'll be there in a minute," he whispered
tiredly.
"Hurry up though, the last time we did anything like
this you took ages to get changed!"
"Don't exaggerate!" he mumbled, quite offended
but raring to go. Soon Simon was read and they set
off. You're probably wondering where they were
going. Well, I'll tell you. They were going to
Foxes Wood.
"Have you got the project paper?" asked Simon
anxiously, shovelling his feet (he was quite a serious and
proud person).
"Of course I have," said Jo, rummaging around in
her bag. "At least, I think I so," she
mumbled.
"O don't say you've forgotten it Jo!" whispered
Simon angrily.
"Well at least I remembered to bring some paper",
she said proudly.
"And I bought some plasters, drinks and
biscuits," Simon replied.
There was a long pause while they were walking when
suddenly; there was a loud scream.
"Jo, is that you?" shouted Simon, who'd been
walking in front by about five footsteps.
"I've, I've ..." she stopped.
"What have you done, do you need help or something?
"No, I've got a scratch from a bramble!"
Simon started getting quite annoyed when he suddenly said,
"I've seen that long stick before. Are we going
around in circles?"
Jo didn't want to argue so she didn't say anything.
She put her rucksack under the nearest tree and had a look
around. She could see spider webs covered in water so
they looked quite creepy. She could also see a little
stream going through the trees. There was also some very
dark shade of green trees that were standing there looking
quite scary. "They look like they are going to jump
up and walk," Jo laughed to Simon. There was no
reply. "Simon!" thought Jo. She ran
everywhere; left, right, on the ground, up trees, Simon was
nowhere to be seen. "Oh great!", she
mumbled. "This is just what I need. Where is
he?" Jo started looking for him but he wasn't
there. She looked around for anything belonging to him,
but she couldn't see anything. Suddenly, she jumped five
foot in the air. She heard footsteps behind her and she
ran like the wind however, when she thought she had gone far
enough, she heard a shout.
"I'm done here!" someone called and there Simon
was. He was in a deep, dark place underground, filled by
coal. A mineshaft!
"Oh, Simon," Jo gasped with horror. he was
up to his ankles in coal. "Are you alright?"
she called, feeling half guilty about the whole thing.
"What does it look like?" he shouted back.
There was a short pause then Jo ran off into the dreary,
gloomy wood.
"Come back shouted Simon. "Will she come
back?" he thought.
Meanwhile, Jo was running, running, panting, panting.
She saw a huge, long branch that she and Simon had seen before
on their journey (although they were going round and round in
circles) lying on the ground. She grabbed it and
ran. There was no way anything was going to stop her
now. no way. Nothing.
During this time, Simon was panicking. He was stuck
down a mineshaft, his friend had run off and he though he
would never get back home. But Simon was brave so he
didn't cry. he had confidence in Jo and knew she had
gone to get help. Deep down he was scared stiff,
symbolised by his involuntary shaking and he started shaking.
"No need to shake Simon, anyone would think you'd seen
a ghost!"
"Oh Jo, it's you!"
"Who d'you think it was, the bogeyman?"
The two friends were so immensely happy to be reunited at
last they were determined to get themselves out of the muddle.
"I brought a long branch which should get you
out," Jo whispered.
"It better do, I'm bored of just standing here!"
Simon replied.
They gave it a try and did it work? What do you think? The
branch was very helpful at first but then it snapped like a
crocodile crunching its prey. "THUD" Jo fell
down too. What a disaster!
"Great. Now our parents will suspect we've
gone," muttered Jo frustratedly. There was silence
for along time but suddenly they heard footsteps above their
heads. Could it be a fox?
"Why does it have to be us?" said Simon and he
kicked the wall. The rock parted and before them was a
tunnel!
"My dad was telling me about how mineshafts have
tunnels," Jo whispered softly "This must be one of
them."
"Freedom!" Simon shouted and started crawling.
"Wait for me," Jo squeaked, still holding onto
the sharp stick.
As soon as they were out someone, or something, tripped
them up.
"What was that?" Simon said, quite annoyed.
Suddenly a hand started dragging them towards a bush.
"Pull," someone whispered, but Jo knew what to
do. She got her stick and stabbed the hand. Someone
yelled.
"Run for your life!" Jo bellowed and she started
pumping her arms as quickly as she could. They ran and
ran until they thought they'd gone far enough. #We've
left our bags behind," moaned Jo.
"Do you honestly think I'm going back to get dragged
into a bush by some mad person?" Simon replied
aggressively.
"No, I was just saying," Jo muttered. offended.
They carried on walking through a demure part of the wood,
looking around for anything to eat or drink.
Caterpillars were munching, owls hooting and birds chirping
however, Jo and Simon were getting scared.
"I think maybe we should start jogging as we're both
scared stiff," Jo whispered, trying to sound almost
brave.
"Yeah, alright," Simon replied. So they set
off towards the demure and eadly part of the wood. it
was freezing, as Jo was tugging hard on her coat to keep warm
and as for Simon, well he was cold as well and gripping
immensely hard onto his jacket too. Bravely, the two
friends carried on walking until there was a sound of
shrieking laughter and ghostly music! Chains were clanking,
the mustic got louder so Simon and Jo ran for their lives
towards nothing in particular but interestingly managed to get
out of the wood in one piece! "I think there's more than
just foxes in that eerie place!" whispered Jo.
"Your right about that!" replied Simon, shovelling
his feet again.
Out of nowhere, the biggest mansion they had ever seen
appeared before their own eyes. it had brown, broken
window frames lying on the ground, flowers were growing as
high as the trees and the whole house was a black as the
blackest bat you've seen. Speaking of bats, on the damp
attic roof, as one half had been blown away, at least 17 bats
were all perched neatly in a row all staring at one
another. The door was painted green with what looked
like blood had been dripping down it's rough wooden texture
for hours it seemed then Jo noticed a thin wire leading in
through the window of the spooky mansion so she beckoned Simon
to have a close up.
"Lets have an adventure!" whispered Jo, getting
really excited.
"We're supposed to be doing a project on Foxes not
"Following the Wire!" replied Simon, grateful that
that was a great excuse.
"You're just scared!" cooed Jo, who was already
making her way towards the window.
"Not." said Simon and followed on behind Jo,
tiptoeing over to the window, scared in case a monster and or
ghost would be lurking near by! It was damp and cold in
the mansion. Moss was growing everywhere and the walls
were covered, like the door, in BLOOD! They followed the
wire round the corners in silence. A man in a black and
white top came darting at them with dried blood on his
hands. jo was just about to run when the figure spoke.
"What are you doing kids? Are you in the
film?"
"Film?" exclaimed Simon. "What
film?"
"The Murderer's on the Loose!" the man
explained. Simon and Jo stared at the man, open mouth
and eyes glowing!
"So the noises and the blood ..."
"All fake." the man replied, looking like he was
about to burst out laughing.
"What is that on your hand?" Simon asked the
stranger, whose face was visible against his hooded cloak.
"Well I was in the forest and someone made a thud near
the bush. My boss told me that that was my queue to grab
the actor, Jonathan Parker but instead I got a stab with a
stick so I yelled and the people ran away!" Jo started to
shovel her feet, as she was the guilty one.
"Well if you're not in the film, why are you
here?" he asked.
"We had to do a project on foxes and our friends told
us this was the best wood for it"
"I would of thought you would have been with a
girl," the stranger said lookinga t Jo, "and you
with a boy!"
"Our teachers made the girls line up in one line and
the boys another." Simon replied, "so we got put
together"
"Well it's now 5.30 am so you better go home otherwise
your folks will get worried won't they?"
"I suppose." said Jo, realising she had sneaked
out.
"I'll show you the back door so you don't have to
climb through the window shall I?" the man said pointing
behind him. As soon as they were out the door, chains
started clanking and noises were screeching out the
windows. Jo and Simon sighed as they were not afraid at
all so they trudged back home.
I don't think I'd like to do a project on foxes in the
middle of the night, would you? |
