South Gloucestershire SSCO's

Caroline Bungay, our new assistant Partnership Development Manager, has slotted into her post with consummate ease and is now creating a partnership directory, a co-ordinated calendar of events and training across South Gloucestershire and entertaining everyone she encounters with her IT brilliance!!

Caroline is also working with The Director of Sport at The Grange, in order to co-ordinate and compliment her work of the college and the SSCO Partnership.

We were always told that in the second year of the partnership we would really start to see action!  You better believe it!  Our NOF grant for Out of School Hours Learning appeared and its been spend, spend, spend!  Harris' Sports have begun to supply our schools with tens of thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

NOF Projects up and running:

Brazilian Skills Soccer

Each of the 27 schools will receive 14 sessions of coaching in this exciting slant on football skills with the use of samba music.  Each school receives 10 futebal de saloa balls and the coaching is targeted at year 5 boys with behavioural problems, with other being invited to participate as well.

Huff and Puff

Training took place for our 24 primary and 3 special schools early October.  SMA's and 1 teacher from each school attended and a £500 bag of fantastic equipment was delivered to each school.  This will be used with KS1 pupils for structured lunch and playtime activities.  The major problem being the storage of such a huge amount of equipment.  Great problem!

SAQ (Speed, Agility and Quickness)

Training is a system of progressive exercise and instruction, which develops fundamental motor abilities, balance and co-ordination.  SAQ works with right / left sides of the brain and develops fine motor skills.  It is of benefit to all athletes, right up to National Squads.  Through this new initiative pupils will develop movement skills which will enable them to have greater access to and enjoyment of PE / Sport.  The Grange Family of schools will use SAQ with pupils identified as having Special Educational Needs, those with and without statements, as well as pupils who are identified as being unlikely to reach expected National Curriculum levels.  Each school will undertake a term of lunchtime and breakfast clubs per year, supported by LSA's, JSLA / CSLA students and parent helpers.  A family celebration event will be held annually.

Look out for the following new activities across the partnership in the new year:
  • Circus Skills
  • Hockey for year 7, 8 and 9 boys
  • A year 6, 7 and 8 Dance Club
  • Boccia and New Age Curling

Schemes of Work training

Schemes of Work training with Chriton Caspon and Jan Pritchard took place in September.  This was a joint venture with the PE association and the Youth Sports Development Advisor, using the Best Practice Forum in order to work with Secondary Heads of PE and SSCO's.  There will be a primary day in March for all PLT's and other Primary PE co-ordinators - watch this space!

PLT Training

This has continued with Module 3 training (Curriculum Planning).  However the Youth Sports Trust forgot to send a trainer to our recent Module 4 training (Planning for Learning)!  Still, in true PE style we managed to make the most of our time and enjoyed a pleasant lunch at YOSC!  This was the first real problem we have encountered and I would like to thank all my team for the professional way in which they used the time and worked with each other and me on the day!

We continue to work closely with The Grange Sports College and await a successful outcome for King Edmunds' Business & Enterprise and Sports College bid and have supported them fully in their efforts.

We have a number of Sportsmark / Activemark bids to send to Sport England this year and again have supported those schools in this work.

In collaboration with the Youth Sports Development Advisor and Sports Development we will begin the process of information and discussion around the expansion of the SSCO programme in South Gloucestershire.  After many meetings with YST, Directorate of LEA and Community Services, The Grange and King Edmunds (Sports Colleges) we will begin to disseminate and receive feedback on the proposed roll out of the two partnerships in which all schools will be invited to take part in 2005.  The first meeting is with the Secondary Head Teachers, followed by Primary Heads and Secondary Heads of PE in the coming term.

And Finally

We have to say goodbye to some valued members of the team.  Kath Britton, our Special SSCO has deserted us for a swimming development post in Bristol - we wish her much success in her new venture (but not that much!).  Only joking Kath - thanks for all your hard work!

We are very lucky to replace her with Jane Whittock, an experienced secondary PE teacher, who has been working in the SEN department at Brimsham Green School for the last few years.  Kath, Jane and Phil Medlow, our other Special SSCO have all recently attended Sportsability training - Boccia, New Age Curling and Table Hockey here we come!
