Congratulations
|
MANY,
MANY CONGRATULATIONS!!! National Recognition! Didn't we do
well?
Mary Whyatt - National Council for School Sport. Female PE
Teacher of the Year 2004!
Congratulations go to Mary for being given this award by the
National Council for School Sport. Only one applicant is
permitted from each LEA and Mary fitted the rigorous criteria
perfectly. The categories include service over a number of
years, management of the PE programme, inclusion, staff training
and a comitment beyond the school. When Mary started at
Cadbury Heath there was no PE Co-ordinator. Her
dedication, enthusiasm and leadership have established both
herself and the school within South Gloucestershire. She
leads by example, ensuring the maximum impact of the NOF
activities and the clubs she runs. Children at her school
regularly take part in an extensive programme of Out of School
Hours activity, which contributed to her successful application
for Activemark Gold and the FA's Charter.

HIGH 5 Netball
|
Young Netball Organisers
|
Ten
year 10/11 students from Kingsfield and The Grange recently
completed the Young Netball Organisers Course. This taught
them how to plan, coach and umpire HIGH 5 Netball as well as
organising a Festival for primary pupils. 70 year 4 and 5
pupils from local primaries attended 4 coaching sessions at The
Grange School and Sports College and then went on to play
in a highly successful HIGH 5 Netball Festival. Everyone
involved thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it is hoped that
further sessions will be arranged following the positive
response from the primary pupils and their parents who supported
them throughout. The Grange and Kingsfield students gained
valuable experience in leadership and will hopefully go on to do
more coaching courses.

We had a memorable experience training for the 'Young Netball
Organiser's Award'. Ten of us from Kingsfield and four
from The Grange, all in years 10 and 11 were working towards the
qualification. We started off with four two-hour HIGH 5
sessions, learning how HIGH 5 worked, how to umpire and how to
coach young children.
We all had great fun once the children, from years 4 and 5,
started to arrive. There were four training sessions for
the children in which we did basic warm-ups and netball-related
skills to prepare them for a tournament several weeks
later. The children improved tremendously and went away
with smiles on their faces after every session. When the
training sessions were completed, there was a tournament in
October, which was held at The Grange School. We, as newly qualified Young Netball Organisers,
acted as team managers. The tournament was a great success
and was well worth all the hard work and time. We all went
away with more confidence and an All England Young Netball
Organiser's Award.

Kingsfield Football Festival
|
The tournament was hosted by Kingsfield School on Wednesday 24th
November 2004. It went really well as it ran very
smoothly. We were able to practice our leadership skills
by taking a group each. We started with a warm up and some
skills practices, such as passing, dribbling and shooting.
The teams then played three matches. Overall, the whole
tournament was very successful and all the players, leaders and
spectators enjoyed themselves.

Kingsfield 6th form)
Quote from Andy Jones, PLT, Park School, Kingsfield:
"A great format - training and competitive games...
Children really enjoyed it... No sitting around"

Inclusion Badminton King Edmunds and Culverhill
|
Inclusion
badminton started again very successfully for the second time
with coach Simon Laskey on 16th September 2004. This year
there were four Year 8 girls and four Year 9 boys from King
Edmunds, plus ten Key Stage 3 pupils from Culverhill. It's
now coming to an end after 9 weeks and all the pupils who
attended regularly seemed to have really enjoyed it! As a
teacher at KECS and an observer of the course I feel the pupils
have improved their skills of the game within the nine weeks so
far as well as learning to co-operate with other pupils. I
am very impressed with all those who have taken part regularly
from both schools. One pupil from King Edmund quotes:
"I have learnt a lot about badminton as well as having
fun and also made some new friends from Culverhill"
Well done for all your hard work and thank-you to those
involved. Looking forward to the football after Christmas!

Dance Club KS2/3 Filton High School
|
|
The dance programme is now up and running for its second
year. There are 27 girls involved (20 primary pupils and 7
secondary pupils). The Filton High School students all
took part last year and are now adopting leader roles to work
with the Primary pupils. The programme is helping to forge
links between primary and secondary, developing basic skills and
just as important building self esteem and confidence. As
with last year they are building towards a final performance to
be held in June, and to perform at the SSCO celebration awards.

Boccia and New Age Curling Patchway High School
|
On Thursday 17th November, 9 teams of children from 5 South
Gloucestershire Schools (Coniston Primary School, Little Stoke
Primary School, Patchway C of E, New Siblands Primary School and
Wheatfield Primary School all attended a Boccia and New Age
Curling tournament held at Patchway Community College. Mr
J Foyle of Patchway Community College ran the event with the help
of several Year 11 students who are studying PE at GCSE level.
After the last few rounds of the games there was a quick stop
for refreshments and then back to the games. A
Patchway Student refereed each game and they also scored,
supervised and controlled the event. Overall the event was
a huge success with all the competitors willing to give it their
best and enjoy themselves. It was great to see so many
students competing against each other in the right way. A
big congratulations to Wheatfield who won the event overall.
Nick Robinson, Year 1, Patchway Community College
