Summer 2004 articles:

CPD

Our team of PLT's have now undergone induction and 6 module training session over the last 2 years.  We have now 24 accredited curriculum leaders; no other subject can offer this quality, national recognition, at primary level.  Hopefully, some of the work we have done alongside the SSCO's can be used across all curriculum areas.  The 2 modules completed this term were, teaching and learning and assessment and reporting.  KS2 / 3 transition should really benefit from developments from this training.  SSCO's have their own CPD programme which has involved "being an effective SSCO" and OSHL.

TOP LINK

5 festivals were run this term, at the secondary schools.  400 primary children took part in Tennis at Kingsfield and Filton, basketball at The Grange, athletics at King Edmunds and hockey at Patchway.  These festivals were run and organised by 100 JSLA / CSLA students.  They linked to the South Gloucestershire Festival of Youth Sport, where the primary pupils had 6 coaching sessions and the older students could work alongside an experienced coach being mentored.  The TOP LINK festivals were used as a pre festival and therefore the development work was that much more linked and progressive.  At the Grange two year 11 pupils achieved level 2 basketball coaching awards and 5 primary pupils were selected for the South Gloucestershire development squads.

As always, lessons will be learned for next year and we will make more of the mentoring of our older pupils by the coaches and work more in the primary schools before the festival, in order to enhance the leadership opportunities.

Table Top Cricket

On Tuesday May 4th Yate Leisure Centre was bustling with activity.  65 pupils were involved in a Table Top Cricket Festival.  Seven schools across both Bristol and South Gloucestershire participated:
  • Kingsweston (13 pupils)
  • New Siblands (6 pupils)
  • Culverhill (14 pupils)
  • Warmley Park (11 pupils)
  • Briarfield (8 Pupils)
  • Brimsham Green (2 pupils)
  • Claremont (10 pupils)
  • The Grange (4 JSLA students)
Martin Mansell, the table top cricket co-ordinator for ECB and YST, had kindly agreed to run a tournament in South Gloucestershire to promote the game within this region.  The aim being that the game would become part of the school's Summer Term PE curriculum and that next year a team from this area would enter the Regional Finals and then represent South Gloucestershire at the National Finals at Lords next year.

All schools played at least 4 games on the day and displayed great skills of batting, bowling and fielding.  The standard was high considering this was the first time many pupils had played.

The teams and games were organised by four students from the Grange School: Sam Lambert, Dan Webb, Andy Saint and Jack Hunt.  The skills displayed by these pupils were exceptional and without their support the day would not have run so smoothly.  Richard Sparling from Winterbourne Cricket Club was also of invaluable support on the day, helping to score and organise pupils into teams.  It was great to make a link with a local club.

The aim of the day was for pupils to learn a new game in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

For future impact, I would like to organise, with the assistance of Martin Mansell, staff training to clarify the rules and the specification classes.  I would also like to organise the Regional Finals linking with Bristol or Gloucestershire Cricket Club and for a team to represent South Gloucestershire at the National Finals at Lords.

Tri Golf

All 27 primary schools now have a bag of equipment, Schemes of Work and at least one member of staff trained in delivery.  We have formed links with the Kendleshire, Chipping Sodbury and Filton golf clubs.  In the King Edmund family links with family learning have been made and sessions run by the Golf Pro in schools for parents and pupils, creating pathways to the club.  In the Grange and Kingsfield familes taster sessions and awareness evening have been held in order for the schools to be involved in the Young Masters programme.  Attendance has been huge and we are seeing a high interest in golf as a result.  Thanks especially to Mike Bessant for hosting meetings at Kendleshire and Steve Scott-Bowen for his work with the King Edmunds family.  We look forward to next year when we can sustain and strengthen the partnerships.

NOF OSHL Dance Project

This girls only club for years 6, 7 & 8 has been running in the Filton family since Christmas.  It culminated with a show in June at Filton High School.  Well done to Carol Connolly, the Dance Teacher, and all the girls involved. The schools, parents and girls should be proud of their efforts (look out for a report in the next edition).

ACTIVMARK

Many congratulations to Deers Wood Primary who achieved this award after external verification!

The last date for application for the current award was 1st July.  A number of our schools have applied, so fingers crossed!  A new look ACTIVEMARK will be launched in 2005.

FA Charter

After meetings with Nick Baker from the Gloucester FA and Jay Monks, approximately 20 of our primary and secondary schools are applying for this award.  Amongst other things they will be able to apply for £350 towards the purchase of kit.  Links with other local clubs and trained staff (either TOPS or NGB coaching award) are a pre-requisite for the application.

What will we do without him?

As from September Steve Revett will return to full time Head of PE at King Edmunds Business and Enterprise and Sports College.  We will certainly miss his expertise, sense of humour, level head and willingness to take things on.  Thanks for all your efforts Steve, not sure how you managed as Head of PE and SSCO!  Julia Watson will take on the 2 days.

Ruth Ruck has returned from maternity leave and is working with Jesse Foyle as a SSCO at Patchway.  Welcome back!

Jamie Yeap is also leaving Stoke Lodge and has worked hard to take on the role of PLT in the year she has been in post.  She is moving to a school where she will have 10 in her class ... seems like no good luck required!!
