Introduction
|
The Cornerstone of the National Languages Strategy is the
introduction of language learning in all primary schools by
2010, supported by a National Framework for teaching and
learning Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). The intention is that all pupils throughout
Key Stage 2 will have the opportunity to learn a foreign
language and develop their interest in the culture of other
nations.
We acknowledge the excellent work in early language learning
that is developing in some of our schools. However, we are
aware that in many schools, teachers are working in isolation
without access to support networks. The challenge for the
LEA is to promote a greater collaboration between schools, to embed
and extend the best practice across the primary and secondary
curriculum and to share specialist facilities and resources.
During the first year, September 2004 to July 2005, the MFL team
have been working collaboratively with schools to implement the National
Languages Strategy.

Our programme
|
|
Our programme has been developed through what we know to be
successful practice in primary schools combined with the subject
specialism from some of our best secondary colleagues. The
programme will be evaluated at the end of the Summer Term 2005
to ensure that our strategy for 2005-2010 will be informed by
our experience.
|
|
|
Outline of the Strategy
|
- 19 schools are participating
in the programme in the first year.
- Each group of schools is linked to a secondary school
in a similar geographical location.
- Two primary ASTs and three secondary ASTs are working
collaboratively with schools.
- Primary and Secondary ASTs work together to share
knowledge and skills in identified languages and promote
successful primary methodology.
- Identified schools are supported in planning, teaching
and preparing resources to support the programme.
|
It is our intention to provide the
opportunity, over time, for all schools to work with us in
preparation for the implementation of the National Languages
Strategy.
We appreciate that there may be many schools that are not
involved in the first cohort and wish to either embark on or
continue to develop expertise and skills in teaching and
learning MFL. Therefore we would like to make the
following support available to all schools:
- An MFL Conference in the Summer Term 2005
- Information in the 'Literacy Update' and on the Advisory
website
- Information and discussions at Headteacher networks and
English Best Practice Fora
|
|
At regular intervals, we will invite you to share with us any
good practice in language teaching in your school and we will
disseminate this practice across the LEA.
