National Holocaust Memorial Day on Thursday
27th January 2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation
of the extermination and concentration camps in Europe.
South Gloucestershire SACRE organised a programme of
special events.
At 11.45 there was an Act of Remembrance in the Council
Chamber at Kingswood in the presence of the Cllr Mrs June
Lovell, in her role as Chair of the Council. All Council
members and staff were warmly invited to join in this Act of
Remembrance.
Two other events were held during the day and evening of
27th January. ACllr John Godwin presented a lecture, "For genocide to be committed does
anyone have to die?" and there were
performances of music, drama and poetry with special guest
speaker Revd. Bernd Koschland who was a kind (child) of the
Kinderstransport, which transported Jewish children from
Eastern Europe to Great Britain between 1938 and 1939.
Throughout the day there were also poster exhibitions and a
comprehensive educational programme for children from South
Gloucestershire Schools and it turned out to be a profoundly
moving event.
