Q1:  What qualifications would I need to be a Science Technician?

A:  Senior Technicians usually would have an advanced science qualification or are working towards one eg. degree, HND, NVQ3/4, A Levels.

Q2:  Is there a national pay scale?

A:  No, however, there are guidelines recommended by the Local Authority which are related to job descriptions.

Q3:  What training opportunities exist?

A:  ASE is a national organisation which have recently developed NVQ’s for Science Technicians:

Locally, South Gloucestershire provide a network (no charge) to share best practice and gain updates on national developments.

Q4:  Will I have access to regular discussions with my line manager about how well I am doing (Performance Review)?

A:  It is hoped that you would, although the length of the cycle will vary from school to school.

Q5:  How can I improve my basic skills in English, Mathematics and ICT?

A:  There are various ways of gaining a qualification in these skills for life areas. GCSEs and adult Numeracy, adult literacy and ICT qualifications are offered at local Further Education Colleges. Information is available from Filton College or Soundwell College:
