Frequently Asked Questions>  Subject Leaders

Q1:  What training and development opportunities are there for me to enhance my subject leadership skills?

A:  Locally, the Local Authority host ‘Best Practice Fora’ for all subject areas both secondary and primary. The focus is subject specific guidance on how that subject can be led with advice and support on national updates, resources, monitoring, planning etc. In addition, a generic primary subject leadership course is being offered.  The South Gloucestershire Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme provides full details.

In addition, local HEI’s often provide subject specific leadership courses, particularly for the primary phase.

For secondary subject leaders, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust offer interactive school-based workshops you can access. For further details go to www.schoolsnetwork.org.uk  or www.ssatrust.org.uk

Q2:  I am relatively new to teaching and in my last school I did not have sole responsibility for a subject.  In my new school I do have sole responsibility for a foundation subject in which I have no expertise.  Where can I go for help?

A:  Firstly ask in your school if the previous subject leaders has left any leadership resources for you to access.  Has your school offered you the chance to be 'mentored' by a colleague who has particular strengths as a subject leader?  If not ask.  You may wish to attend the best practice forum or register for the course specifically designed for new subject leaders.

Q3:  What is the difference between subject co-ordination and leadership?

A:  Subject Coordination is epitomised by ensuring that colleagues in your school are 'doing things right'  whereas leadership is more focused on 'doing the right things'.  Leadership requires those leading to be proactive in establishing the 'big picture';  for your subject in your school, by accessing as much external information about your subject in terms of national and local priorities and as a result of working more strategically.

Q4:  Budgets are really tight in my school and we cannot afford to attend all of the Best Practice Fora.  How can I access support?

A:  A good place to start would be to find out the email addresses of other teachers in your cluster who are responsible for the same subject as you.  Contact them asking for copies of any documents they are willing to share.  Although their documents may not suit your school context they will have you to crystallise your thought and give you some ideas you may want to adopt.

Q5:  I am currently engaged in a small piece of action research as part of leading in my subject.  Can I gain accreditation for it?

A:  You can.  I suggest that you contact one of the local HEIs and ask to speak with a tutor on the CPD programme about what additional reflection you would need to do in order to obtain accreditation for your work.  If your school takes ITT students from the HEI it may be possible to be granted reduced fees.
