Teaching Staff> Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs)
"An Advanced Skills Teacher is a teacher who achieves the very highest standards of classroom practice and who is paid to share his or her skills and experience with other teachers. AST posts can be based in all types and phases of maintained schools and normally involve some outreach work. In order to take up an AST post a teacher must first have been assessed as meeting AST standards." (by an externally appointed DfES assessor) From DfES AST Guidance - October 2005

Standards FrameworkThe Standards for Advanced Skills Teachers are currently being amended by the Training and Development Agency. The new standards will be in place from September 2006. All ASTs applying for an AST post AFTER September 2006 will be assessed according to the new standards. All existing ASTs will not be required to be assessed against the new standards, however, it is expected that the new standards will be the benchmark used at their performance review meetings from September 2006 onwards. As soon as the new standards are available a link to access them from this site will be provided.
