Welcome to the home page of the Secondary Team that was established on 1st September 2004 following a restructuring of the Advisory Service.  The team is part of the Learning and School Effectiveness Service which, in turn, lies within the Achievement and Inclusion Division of the Department for Children and Young People.  The Secondary Team operates within the LA vision and values and the guiding principals of the Council.  The team aims to provide leadership on strategies which promote and extend learning for both staff and pupils in developing the effectiveness of schools in the secondary phase.  Our goal is to help schools ensure that pupils achieve high standards by enjoying a broad and rich experience of learning.

The Secondary Team is headed by the Senior Secondary Adviser and includes a Secondary Strategy Manage and a range of Teaching and Learning Advisers and Consultants.  The team is also supported by a small number of advisory teachers.  Its work is increasingly extended by the contributions of expert professionals in our Leading Edge, Specialist and Initial Teacher Training Schools, as well as in increasing number of Advanced Skills Teachers.

All our work is channelled through a range of nationally and locally agreed strategies, which include monitoring, support, intervention and challenge in order to raise the quality of learning, teaching, leadership, management and governance in South Gloucestershire Council's Schools.

The key tasks of the Secondary Team include:

  • Providing head teachers, governors and other school staff, both teaching and non teaching, with advice, support and guidance on supported self-evaluation;
  • Promoting national strategies (such as the National Secondary Strategy);
  • Identifying, disseminating and promoting good practice;
  • Setting up and running a wide ranging programme of continuing professional development.
Much of this activity provides a common entitlement for all secondary phase schools, but the team also undertakes targeted work with schools which require additional support.  The Secondary Team works closely with other services in the Achievement and Inclusion Division and with all other sections of the Department for Children and Young People in order to monitor schools' performance and effectiveness, taking action where necessary to secure improvement.
