Higher Level Teaching Assistants

This is a programme of training and assessment; it is a higher status and not a qualification.
You can find more information on this at
http://www.hlta.gov.uk

“Teaching Assistants who achieve higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) status will work closely with the teacher complementing their role and freeing them up to have more time to develop each child to his or her potential.”

South Gloucestershire HLTA’S

In our authority 116 teaching Assistants have now achieved HLTA status.
To be put forward for this next step in professional development Teaching Assistants need the support of their Head Teacher.
You may contact an HLTA in the authority to seek their advice before embarking on this route. Please e-mail Paula Hooper so that you can be put in touch with someone who can help:
bobandpaula@blueyonder.co.uk

Assessment only route

There is only one way to achieve Higher Level Teaching Assistant status in South Gloucestershire by the assessment only route. This is three days preparation for assessment by specialist consultant tutors who will really refine your thinking and writing to help you prepare your evidence for assessment. The assessors will then visit you at school to talk with you about your evidence. They will also meet with your Head Teacher briefly and validate your work further with the teacher you have chosen and your Head or a delegated representative.
Before applying you must have reached level 3 training equivalent. If you do not reached this level please look at the CPD pages to find out further training details.

HLTA Conference

The first HLTA conference was held on Monday 26th March 2007 at the Park Centre in Kingswood.
This was well attended by HLTA’S from all over the authority.
The conference was opened by Angela Feltham with Tom Whittingham who gave an entertaining talk on International Education.
Workshops were held on International Education , Story Telling, Attendance and the Foundation Degree.
All the workshops received favourable reviews.

Lara Scannell (Acting Deputy Head) of Meadowbrook Primary e-mailed Angela Feltham with the following comment:-
All of our HLTAs came back buzzing with ideas and had thoroughly enjoyed the morning. They are now planning many exciting ventures including International links with other schools.

Thank you for organising such a worthwhile day – our HLTAs will definitely be at the next one!

Watch this space for the date of the next conference!
