The Secondary Teaching Assistants Best Practice Forum

This was a new initiative in September 2003 and have been meeting once a term at Severnside Professional Development Centre.  Teaching Assistants have attended from most of our Secondary Schools, Culverhill and Central Teaching.

The forum has enabled Teaching Assistants to meet together to share ideas and resources and have additional speakers on a range topics and interesting subjects.  So far the secondary group have had four really successful sessions:

Session 1 - Building the effective working partnership between teachers and TAs

  • TAs shared resources, methods and systems that have been useful in providing a communication link in school between teacher and TA.
  • Used video - Teacher and TAs planning.  Discussed ways in which this could be achieved within the Secondary setting.

Session 2 - Time was given to looking at resources used by the Behaviour Support Team.  The aim was to share ideas and tried and tested materials that could be recommended

  • Kathryn Pike was invited to explain the role of the PRU, especially with regards to reintegrating pupils in KS3.
  • We generally discussed ways in which TAs feel they are included in their school community.  What new initiatives were happening in schools to promote TA inclusion and what further developments were required.

Session 3 - Behaviour Management Strategies led by Sara Turner

  • Looked at strategies to use with challenging pupils and how the inclusion support service supports such pupils.

Session 4 - Solution Focus Approach to working with children and young people

  • This session was led by Christine Youngman, Educational Psychologist.  We looked at using this approach when working 1-1 with challenging and troubled pupils.
The last meeting looked at South Gloucestershire's initiative to support the development of Gifted and Talented pupils.  Julia Mabey, School Improvement Adviser, attended the group along with Martin Baker, an Education Representative from Learn Premium.  There was the opportunity to view a new resource 'learn premium' from The Guardian, which includes various ideas and resources addressing all Key Stages.

The resource includes:
  • Individual research tasks for young people
  • Lesson ideas and support
  • A news desk that is regularly updated and lots more

The cost of the resource is related to the number of young people in the school and what aspects of the package the school would like to subscribe to.  The representative at the meeting suggested schools discussed this prior to any purchase agreement.
